Seeking Talent - Initially as Volunteer (Systems-Mechatronics-Digital Engineering Enthusiast)
Qualification – No limit (BSc./MSc graduate or pursuing; or PhD level) | Can be part time but willing to see and build position and career for themselves based on the challenge and requirement (please see below for details)
Mission Brief: We operate at the bleeding edge of physical-digital interaction. Our work involves solving problems that most have deemed impossible, armed with little more than first-principles thinking, relentless curiosity, and an unapologetic bias for action. We are a small, skunkworks-style team building the foundational technology .
Our motivation: We are driven by singular motivation of best care recipe for each patient on the operating room (OR) table, through technological innovations and guidance, i.e. robotics, sensors, AI, data-driven platforms including IoT-systems for quantification of surgery, automated microsurgery and standardization of care at tool-tissue level (in closed door OR premises).
Our key innovation driver: What is the next big disruption in OR technologies, digital platforms and technology interfaces driving precision/accuracy, dexterity, automation and standardization of patient care through machines?
Your Mission Canvas: What You Will Do
As our Mechatronic Engineer, you will own the nexus of mechanics, electronics, and software. Your responsibilities are not a checklist, but a dynamic field of play:
- Conceptualize & Architect: Translate abstract system requirements into a cohesive mechatronic design. You will be a key system integrator, ensuring that the mechanical form, electronic nervous system, and software soul work in perfect harmony.
- Breathe Life into Silicon and Steel: Design, model, and simulate complex electro-mechanical systems from the ground up using tools like SolidWorks, MATLAB and Simulink. You'll be performing everything from basic kinematic analysis to complex multi-body dynamic simulations.
- Design the Nervous System: Architect and execute the full stack of electronics, from schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout (Altium/KiCad) for custom control boards to sensor integration (custom sensors) and power electronics design.
- Tame the Physics with Code: Develop and implement high-performance firmware in C/C++ for embedded microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, STM32, ESP32). You'll write the low-level drivers, implement real-time control loops, and master communication protocols (SPI, I2C, CAN, EtherCAT).
- Master Control: Implement and tune advanced control systems. You will be responsible for creating stable, robust, and high-performance system behavior.
- Prototype with Vigor: Move seamlessly from CAD model to physical reality. You are a master of rapid prototyping, leveraging FDM/SLA 3D printing, CNC, and whatever tools you can get your hands on to iterate and validate designs at ludicrous speed.
Profile of a Pioneer: The Candidate We Seek
Formal education is respected, but a portfolio of impossible things you've already built is revered.
- A First-Principles Thinker: You don't rely on off-the-shelf solutions. You deconstruct problems to their physical and mathematical core and build solutions from the ground up.
- System-Level Polymath: You are fluent in the languages of mechanical engineering (statics, dynamics, materials), electrical engineering (circuits, signals), and computer science (algorithms, data structures, control).
- The Ideal Arsenal (Proficiency in some, passion to master others):
- Mechanical: 3D CAD, FEA/CFD simulation, DFM principles.
- Electronics: PCB Design, firmware development (C/C++), RTOS.
- Control/Software: Control Theory (classical & modern), Python for scripting/testing, familiarity with ROS is a significant plus.
- Hands-On: Soldering, wiring, use of lab equipment (logic analyzers, VNAs), and a fundamental love for building things that move.
The Experience: What You Will Gain
Volunteer opportunity for those driven by challenge and creation. In return for your time and expertise, we offer:
- Direct Technical Impact: You will have significant creative freedom and technical ownership. Your contributions will directly shape the outcome of a groundbreaking project.
- An Unparalleled Portfolio Piece: You will be solving a problem that matters, creating technology that has never existed before. This will be the project you talk about for the rest of your career.
- Access to our Lab/Workshop: We provide the space, the core equipment, and the shared intellectual horsepower.
- Ready for employment in any high-tech/deep-tech healthcare industry.
- A longterm career opportunity (paid position) within our Foundational Medical Robotics Innovation Space Project neuroArm (continued career growth and mentorship as an academic, e.g. Systems Engineer Co-Lead (if of interest)), or corporate entrepreneurial technical position in its spin-off venture OrbSurgical Ltd., e.g. Technical Engineering Associate, with growth potential and plan.
Why we are looking for volunteering enthusiast? Innovating and building next-gen systems around sensors/AI/robots/automation/digital innovations in the OR, with patient care as supreme requirement (translation-commercialization to medical grade systems) requires a unique talent and hunger for excellence, something that cannot be restricted within a paradigm of job or contract. Thus we wanted to call and seek individuals that are ambitious and care about the honour of their talent and contribution, show commitment to this vision/field, ready to take risk and grow in the process, while creating a unique job for themselves and be a key player in this team from within. While no duration is defined for the honorary voluntary contribution, a paid position will be offered after the demonstrated skill, talent, dedication and alignment to the team’s goal is evident.
